In the Popocultural exhibition at South London Gallery, Simon Periton's
8 metre tall, fluorescnet
pink paper doily dominated the room. The intricately patterned gates were
a complex soup of graphic
references from Christopher Dresser, Aubrey Beardsley, the Poll Tax riots
to the Sex Pistols.
As in all of Simon Periton's paper pieces, the delicate handicraft of
the staid and decorative
doily is subverted by his clashing appropriations.
